Topical Local Anesthetics for Painful Procedures

We understand that sometimes children will need the assistance of a special “numbing cream” or local topical anesthetic for a painful procedure such as having blood drawn.  We are happy to help you with this request. Please note that you and your physician must discuss this prior to the office visit.  If you and your physician deem it necessary for your child to use an anesthetic cream, your physician will write a prescription for the cream and will give you directions for application of the cream with the prescription.

On the day of the office visit, apply the topical anesthetic cream as directed. Then you and your child can wait for the cream to work in the comfort of your own home.  Keep the cream on your child until he/she sees the physician or nurse for their procedure.
