Kathleen Salter lives in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, with her husband, Dr. Blair Keagy, chairman of Vascular Surgery at UNC. She has two married children and two grandchildren. She grew up in Pittsbugh, Pennsylvania, where she lived before leaving to attend the University of Michigan. She completed her medical school training at the University of Pittsburgh. Following residency and fellowship training at UNC she practiced pediatric cardiology for several years at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania, before returning to join Chapel Hill Pediatrics in 1981.
Her medical interests are cardiology, infectious diseases, and care of the newborn.
In her spare time she enjoys photography, travel, and being with the grandchildren.
