General Pediatric Websites

HealthyChildren: A new website designed by the American Academy of Pediatrics for parents.

AAP Website: Official site of the American Academy of Pediatrics includes sections on parenting, health topics, and a bookstore.

KidsHealth: The largest and most visited site on the Web containing doctor-approved information about children. It is divided into three separate areas: kids, teens, and parents. Very user- friendly.

Bright Futures: Prevention and health promotion website for infants, children, adolescents and their families.

Center for Young Women’s Health: From the Children’s Hospital of Boston, this website is full of easy-to-read information on many topics relevant to young women’s health. The site includes information for both teens and parents.

Young Men’s Health:  Produced by the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital. The purpose of the website is to provide carefully researched health information to teenage boys and young men.

Healthy Travel

CDC travel website: Great resource for traveling abroad. It contains recommended vaccines for specific areas, information for traveling with children, and outbreak alerts.

Teen Sites

Teen Growth: Part of the KidsGrowth website, this site covers several topics for teens, including an interactive question and answer section with one of the site doctors.

Teen Health: A great teen website including several important topics for teens, including diet and nutrition, sexual health, sports, and a question and answer section.

Vaccinations & Immunizations

CDC vaccine site: National Immunization Program (NIP) through the CDC provides information about specific vaccines for healthcare professionals and parents.

Vaccine Information from CHOP: A vaccine education center for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Provides complete, up-to-date and reliable information about vaccines to parents and healthcare professionals.

National Network for Immunization Information: Provides up-to-date, science-based information on vaccines to healthcare professionals, the media, and the public.

Institute for Vaccine Safety: A website run by Johns Hopkins University that provides an independent assessment of vaccines and vaccine safety.

Vitamins

Vitamin D use: Information from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) regarding Vitamin D use for infants and children.

Multivitamin use: Guidelines for vitamin use for children. Provided by AAP.

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD)

CHADD: a non-profit organization working to improve the lives of people affected by ADHD. The website includes links to local support groups and conferences.

National Institutes of Mental Health: Describes the symptoms, causes, and treatments for ADHD, with information on getting help and coping.

U.S. State Department International Adoption Website: Provides information for families looking to adopt internationally by the U.S. Department of State.

Safety

Center for Disease Control and Prevention: provides statistics about injuries in children and guidelines for injury prevention.

Consumer Product Safety Commission: up-to-date information about product recalls.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration: safety guidelines for driving with children, broken down by age group.

Safekids.org: a global network of organizations whose mission is to prevent accidental childhood injury.

Internet Safety Education for Kids and Teens: website teaching Internet safety to kids and teens. Includes sections for educators, law enforcement and parents.

Safety Issues From A-Z: Website with topics on various safety issues including after-school safety, bicycle safety, car safety, gun safety, playground safety and more.

Eating Disorders

National Eating Disorders Association: national organization for families and sufferers. Excellent resources on the website.
The Eating Disorders Coalition: to advance the federal recognition of eating disorders as a public health priority. Family Action Council provides an excellent network of families and legislators.

Obesity

Obesity Society – Pediatric Obesity: a section dedicated to childhood/pediatric obesity, complete with resources and news updates.

Medline Plus Website on Obesity: sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, this page has links to many articles and other websites dealing with childhood obesity.

Mother’s Clubs:

Chapel Hill-Carrboro Mother’s Club: a support network for Chapel Hill mothers. Includes playgroups, childcare and preschool resources, and community events.

Chapel Hill-Durham Mother’s of Multiples Group: a support network for parents or expectant parents of multiples (twins, triplets, etc.).
