Advice Nurses

Parents are blessed with a wonderful sense of intuition about their children. We have found that most parents, even without formal medical training, know when their child needs pediatric care.

For those times when you’re just not sure and you need some seasoned advice, Chapel Hill Pediatrics and Adolescents is there to help! We have a team of registered nurses offering telephone triage services to provide reassurance, information and advice, when you need it.

Our telephone services are available as follows:

  • Advice nurse phone lines take messages Monday – Friday 8:00am – 4:00pm
  • Physician message phone lines take messages Monday – Friday 8:00am – 4:00pm
  • Medication refill phone lines take messages Monday – Friday 8:00am – 5:00pm

How to Reach Our Expert Advice Nurses

The advice nurses triage the messages left on all three phone lines and return calls according to medical urgency. These nurses are experienced and highly-trained, and they follow a set of nationally-accepted, thoroughly-tested telephone triage guidelines in answering calls about your child’s health.

After listening to your concerns and asking important questions, they will offer advice, direct you to specific pediatric health education materials, make appointment recommendations or refer your questions to a pediatrician for further advice.

Children’s Health Education & Medical Information Resources

Due to the high volume of calls received, Chapel Hill Pediatrics and Adolescents asks that you look through the health information links on this website before leaving a message for our advice nurses. Often, parents can find just the medical information they are looking for!

Some of the patient resources our advice nurses recommend parents check include:

  • KidsHealth.org offers advice on children’s health, behavior, and growth from before birth through the teen years
  • Your Child’s Health by Barton Schmitt, © 2005 is a reference book that we’ve found to be particularly helpful for parents and what our Advice Nurses also use as a reference. It addresses many childhood illness symptoms, injury situations and specific child behaviors that may be concerning to parents.
